Banned Books: Virtual READ OUT

banned book weekSaturday, October 3 from 10 am – 4 pm

Since the inception of Banned Books Week in 1982, libraries and bookstores throughout the country have staged local read-outs—a continuous reading of banned/challenged books—as part of their activities. Now in it's fifth year (2015), readers from around the world can participate in the Banned Books Virtual Read-Out. We are looking for participants who want to proclaim the importance of the freedom to read by being part of our St. Johns County Public Library video that will be featured on a dedicated Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out YouTube channel. All you have to do is show up and read a small section from one of your favorite banned books!

Celebrating Life: Dia de los Muertos

Dia de los MuertosSaturday, October 24 @ 2pm

Mexico has a long and colorful tradition of celebrating life through art dating back to the Aztec Indians. Join cultural artist Irma Reed-Castellanos to discover the meaning behind the tradition of catrinas, sugar skulls and masks as part of Dia de los Muertos. Irma creates and molds the catrinas and masks using a paper-mache mixture, a fascinating art form which is still practiced by millions of people today. In this FREE presentation she will explain the historical facts and its relationship to her artwork, which will also be on display at the Anastasia Island Library from October 7th through November 2nd. For further information please visit http://www.cultural-art.com or email Irma at cultural-art@outlook.com.
