Arthur Conan Doyle introduces Sherlock Holmes, the "greatest detective of all time," in A Study in Scarlett (1887). Although it is said that "Holmes possessed a singular style unlike any detective seen before," book club readers will note the startling similarity between Holmes and Poe's detective Auguste Dupin (Murders in the Rue Morgue, 1841). The genius of Conan Doyle was reflected in Holmes' formidable intelligence, turning crime solving into a science. His ever-reliable sidekick, Dr. Watson, brought the intimidating deductive powers of Holmes back down to earth with the soothing voice of reason. Do you agree? Let's discuss.
