Wednesday Brown Bag Lunch: St. Augustine's Literary Legacy with David Nolan

Friends of the Main Library St. AugustineCelebrate St. Augustine's literary legacy and join the Friends as David Nolan, author, historian, and civil rights activist, presents an armchair tour of St. Augustine's historic homes of literary significance. Nolan is a contributing author to A Booklover's Guide to Florida, published in 1992. He worked on the first official survey of old buildings in St. Augustine. After what he describes as a "twenty year love affair with historic architecture," he collaborated with artist Jean Ellen Fitzpatrick and photographer Ken Barrett to produce The Houses of St. Augustine, published in 1995.

For this special program, reservations will be required. Seating is limited, so please call the library at 827-6940 to make your reservation. Patrons are welcome to bring their lunch; beverages and snacks will be provided. For more information, please contact Friends President Toni Siriani.

MAIN-iac Science Lab - Hour of Code: an introduction to programming for kids

Mainiac Labs is branching out into new territory by participating in the world wide Hour of Code! Kids (Ages 4+), can explore a basic introduction to computer science and even learn basic programming skills using the Angry Birds platform. This one hour program is designed to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics. There will be a guided lesson followed by individual and group exploration. Sponsored by The Friends of Main Library St. Augustine.

 

Florida Writers Association: To Outline or Not to Outline?

This workshop compares the more structured approach of plotting before you write with what many consider the ultimate creative process of jumping in and uncovering the story as you write. Author Victor Digenti will present many examples, testimonials, and even an alternate outlining scenario using fairy tales as a foundation. You'll leave this one-hour workshop with a newfound appreciation for the writing process. Participants will learn:

  • The pros and cons of outlining
  • The pros and cons of writing by the seat of your pants
  • How to use both in your writing
  • Using the "Fairy Tale" structure of outlining

  • The one secret almost everyone overlooks in a book trailer
