Book & Bites: Dining at Downton

Journey back in time and experience a little history with us in the first of this two-part Books & Bites series. Books & Bites, a delightful cooking demonstration, combines our love of literature and food. In this installment, enjoy samples that might have been served at a Crawley family tea, take home new recipes, and gain a little knowledge of Britain's grand estates like Highclere Castle, the setting of Downton Abbey. This program is compliments of the Friends of the Southeast Branch Library. REGISTRATION IS FULL.

Secrets of Highclere Castle Documentary & Downton Abbey Pilot

Secrets of Highclere Castle and Downton AbbeyDiscover the history and present-day happenings of life in a Victorian castle as we watch a documentary on Highclere Castle, the place that inspired the BBC drama series Downton Abbey, which is shot on location at the Castle. Reality is even more impressive than the fictitious show, as the lord who married a rich wife to avoid bankruptcy also funded the archaeological dig which unearthed Tutankhamun's fabulous treasure. Afterward, we will watch the pilot for BBC's acclaimed series, Downton Abbey. Light snacks will be provided by the Friends of the Southeast Branch Library.

cookbook clubSoutheast is getting gastronomical! We invite foodies to find their way to the library for our Cookbook Club that kicks off this month. Participation is super easy... just borrow a cookbook from the library and try out a recipe that catches your eye. Then, bring the recipe, the cookbook, and samples to the meeting. Let's be each other's taste testers. Iced tea and lemonade are provided, compliments of the Friends of the Southeast Branch Public Library.

Documentary & Danish

Two filmmakers chronicle their time in Sonagchi, Calcutta and the relationships they developed with children of prostitutes who work the city's notorious red light district in the Academy Award-winning documentary, Born Into Brothels. Let’s meet to write letters, be social, and brighten someone else's mailbox. Bring your own stationery supplies, if you have them, otherwise, we’ll have materials to use. Bring addresses of friends and family or write to some of the organizations we are writing to, such as nursing homes and soldiers overseas. Postage provided by the Friends of the Southeast Branch Library.


Southeast Book Club: Burial Rites
