St. Johns County, Florida welcomed its first Bookmobile in 2001. The LEO Express was purchased with LSTA grant funds and targeted the elderly and physically disabled residents of St. Johns County.

In 2008, the Bluebird Express was added and provided the opportunity to serve residents of all ages countywide.

Both Bookmobiles are full-service mobile Libraries that primarily serve residents in out-lying areas of the county, as well as residents in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, medical centers, schools, daycares, afterschool centers, and parks and recreation centers.

Thanks to LSTA grant funding, our extensive collection contains newly released and classic movies, New York Times bestsellers and best-selling authors, music cds, CD Books, Playaways, MP3’s, magazines, and children’s materials. With the addition of “WiFi” cards we have “real-time” access to patrons records, library records, the library’s website www.sjcpls.org and all of its databases. We are also able to provide Internet access to our patrons via a laptop.

In August 2010 we added Books by Mail to our services. This service is available to all St. Johns County residents. Books by Mail staff mails materials free of charge to the resident. The resident may then return the materials to any branch library, including both Bookmobiles. They may also, if eligible, mail materials back using our Free Matter for the Blind & other Handicapped bags.

Stories and More
This program encourages a love for books and reading through storytelling, interactive crafts and games and is available at schools, daycare and afterschool centers. Please see our Stories and More calendar.

Paperback Depots
Another of our LSTA grant-funded programs is the Paperback Reading Depots located throughout the county. We currently have eight locations where you can READ, ENJOY & RETURN. Tell ‘em Betty sent ya!

Daycare “Fun & Learn” Crates
A very popular service providing an assortment of age-appropriate books and movies for preschoolers in licensed daycare centers countywide.

Programming Possibilities Crates
Rotating monthly crate service targeting adult day care and senior residential facilities, that includes an assortment of large print books and movies.

Friends of the Bookmobile
The Bookmobile-Extension Services Department has formed Florida’s First Friends of the Bookmobile organization. This countywide volunteer organization helps to enhance service delivery to people of all ages countywide who for whatever reason find it difficult, if not impossible, to utilize one of the county’s six stationary branches. Friends of the St. Johns County Bookmobile seeks membership from all geographic areas of the county served.
