J.A.A.M. (Japanese Anime At Main): Kimono Demonstration

JAAMThe teen anime club is excited to host this chance to learn how to wear traditional Japanese clothing. Casual Warrior's Kimono will provide a step-by-step demonstration on how to wear a kimono and tie an obi. Come to find out what an obi is! All who attend will be entered into a drawing for a haori (kimono jacket).

Hypnosis for Relaxation

Dr. Chris BeverlyWant to get away and relax but can’t find the time? After attending our free one-hour hypnosis session, you’ll leave feeling rested and ready to conquer the world.

Dr. Chris Beverly will explain the nature and benefits of using hypnosis for relaxation before leading participants through a guided hypnosis session. Dr. Beverly is a Certified Hypnotist and graduate of the Omni Hypnosis Center.

To attend the Hypnosis for Relaxation Session, participants must be:

  • at least 18 years of age, or
  • at least 15 years of age and accompanied by a legal guardian.

MAIN-IAC LABS: Hour of Code

Mainiac Labs is branching out into new territory by participating in the world wide Hour of Code! Kids (Ages 4+), can explore a basic introduction to computer science and even learn basic programming skills using the Angry Birds platform. This 1 hour program is designed to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics.  There will be a guided lesson followed by individual and group exploration. Brown Bag Lunch: Amistad - Friendship and a Fair Trade Store

International educator, Dr. Susan W. Herrera of St. Augustine, believes that hunger, inequality, and poverty could be reduced one small business at a time. Her Fair Trade store, Amistad, or "friendship", newly relocated to Anastasia Island, brings to market beautiful objects and jewelry made by artisans from around the world, helping to improve their lives. Join the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine for Dr. Herrera's presentation about Fair Trade and enjoy the opportunity to shop for gifts among the quality hand-crafted products she brings from her store. Amistad features decorative dinnerware and cups, clothing, jewelry, and art. Friends volunteers will gift-wrap purchases and a percentage of the sales will be donated to benefit the library. Patrons are welcome to bring their lunch. Beverages and snacks will be provided. Seating is limited.

Florida Writers Association: To Outline or Not to Outline?

This workshop compares the more structured approach of plotting before you write with what many consider the ultimate creative process of jumping in and uncovering the story as you write. Author Victor Digenti will present many examples, testimonials, and even an alternate outlining scenario using fairy tales as a foundation. You'll leave this one-hour workshop with a newfound appreciation for the writing process. Participants will learn:

  • The pros and cons of outlining
  • The pros and cons of writing by the seat of your pants
  • How to use both in your writing
  • Using the "Fairy Tale" structure of outlining

This meeting is sponsored by the Ancient City Chapter of the Florida Writers Association and the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine. All book sales benefit the Friends of the Library. Doors open at 10am. All meetings are free and open to the public.
