Sea Urchins, Mud Snails, Spiny Lobsters, Starfish, and Horseshoe Crabs are coming to visit the library this summer. School-age children can learn hands-on about Florida marine biology. Discover how the animals breathe, find and eat food, protect themselves and generally survive in their environment. This FREE program is sponsored in partnership with the Friends of the Library of St. Johns County.

Want to know what you can do help protect the "wild side" of Florida? During this special visit by the the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, school-age children will learn ways they can improve natural Florida. Some of the hands-on educational activities include: discovering which critters live in local waters, looking at macroinvertebrates under the microscope, testing water's salinity, dissolved oxygen, measuring turpidity, and viewing Enviroscapes. This free program is sponsored in partnership with the Friends of the Library of St. Johns County.

You are cordially invited to begin a pleasant and enjoyable journey in the ancient Chinese healing exercise, as you learn and practice Tai-Chi. In class, students will perform soft, continuous movements that will allow them to receive many positive aspects of renewed health, while developing internal stillness. Some of the benefits of Tai-Chi include: relief from muscular tension and anxiety, increased concentration and memory, enhanced sensory awareness, and improved balance. This free workshop is presented by Hector M. Ruiz, Jr., a certified instructor in Tai-Chi and Qi Gong.

Thursday, July 18 @ 3pm
This program uses the book, Shipwreck: Fast Forward, to explore how underwater sites form and the excavation processes used to retrieve information about them. Kids can try their hand at using Cartesian coordinates by playing an adapted version of Battleship to “map” each other’s shipwrecks. They'll also get to map a real, 100-year-old anchor. Presented by the Florida Public Archaeology Network, which is dedicated to the protection of cultural resources, both on land and underwater, and to involving the public in the study of their past. This program is sponsored in partnership with the Friends of the Library of St. Johns County.

Join turtle advocate, Jade Dupuis, from St. Johns County Environmental Division as she teaches us about the amazing turtles found in our area, and why they need our help! Sea turtles are amongst the oldest creatures on earth, but they are currently threatened. The beaches of northeast Florida are an important nesting area for the loggerhead, green, and leatherback sea turtles each summer. Discover how we can share and protect the beaches. We think our turtle friends are so COOL, we'll even celebrate nesting season with a "turtle" ice cream party! This FREE program is sponsored in partnership with the Friends of the Library of St. Johns County.

 

Literary Lions Book Club: Any Book by John Jakes

John Jakes is the acknowledged contemporary master of the family saga. He is the creator of the legendary Kent Family Chronicles, and the Main and Hazard families of The North and South Trilogy.
