Vision Impairment Program

GlassesVERC (Vision Education & Rehabilitation Center, formerly ILAB) is a community-based rehabilitation program for adults and high school youth who have reduced vision to a degree that some difficulty is experienced in daily activities. Services are provided at no cost to the participant. Individuals learn necessary skills to overcome obstacles of vision loss and gain the confidence they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives. VERC serves five counties:  Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau, and St. Johns. If you are visually impaired, know someone who is, or have an interest in blindness and low vision, please join us to learn more.

Flood Determination & Mitigation Assistance

Flood MitigationWednesday, September 17 @ 10am

James Schock, of the St. Johns County Building Services Division, will be in to assist residents with flood information. He can help you with floodplain determinations for your property, how to use the iMap application located on the county website, learn your evacuation zone, and ways you may be able to mitigate against flood and wind losses. He is a professional engineer, a certified Building Official as well as a certified Floodplain Manager, a Florida Building Commissioner, and is the Chair for the Structural Technical Advisory Committee for the State of Florida. He will be at the library from 10am until 4pm, so feel free to drop by when it’s convenient for you.

 

Brown Bag Lunch: Rosamond Parrish

Lincolnville's complicated history and artistic heritage will be the topic of Rosamond Parrish's captivating talk that features vivid images and anecdotes from her book Lincolnville. In addition to hearing how this fascinating neighborhood was the storied center of Civil Rights Movement activity 50 years ago, listeners will learn about current and past artists who've done paintings of Lincolnville landmarks and the folk art that's now part of the local scene. At this program, Parrish will sell her books and donate a percentage of those sales to the library. Indie Writers & Booksellers: Partners in Promotion presented by Donna Pazz Kaufman. Too often, marketing is an after thought, only prompted when the boxes of books sit in the garage waiting for readers. In this session, we'll discuss what retailers will need to be printed on your book cover, the terms bookstores will require, how to manage consignment sales, strategies for getting your book prominent display space, and how to approach a bookstore for events and activities.

This meeting is sponsored by the FWA/ACC and the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine. All book sales benefit the Friends of the Library. Doors open at 10am. All meetings are free and open to the public.

Hypnosis for Relaxation

Want to get away and relax but can’t find the time? For a limited time, the Main Library will host free hypnosis sessions for relaxation and rejuvenation to prepare you for the holiday season. After attending our first session, you’ll leave feeling rested and ready to conquer the world.

Dr. Chris Beverly will explain the nature and benefits of using hypnosis for relaxation before leading participants through a guided hypnosis session. Dr. Beverly is a Certified Hypnotist and graduate of the Omni Hypnosis Center. To attend the Hypnosis for Relaxation Session, participants must be:

  • at least 18 years of age, or
  • at least 15 years of age and accompanied by a legal guardian.

Florida Writers Association: From Manuscript to Marketplace

The craft of writing and the marketing of novels will be the basis for Jacksonville writer Ron Whittington’s presentation. He will discuss his transition from public relations writer to novelist, the craft of writing, and how what he learned can help other writers. Once the book is completed, the marketplace comes next and he will discuss how he used his marketing and public relations background to help successfully market his books, the pitfalls and challenges of competing for sales, and how to stay ahead in the changing environment of book publishing.
