Free Nemours BrightStart Screenings for Ages 3 - 5

Children ages 3-5 are invited to receive a free, 10-minute Early Literacy Screening at the library, courtesy of Nemours BrightStart. Registration is taken on a first-come, first-serve basis by a Nemours representative. Utilize this free screening to find out where your child's literacy strengths lie, and what you can do to help them improve in any other areas before they start school.

 

Adult Summer Reading Program

ReadingJune 2 - August 2

Who says kids have all the fun? Adults can participate in our Adult Summer Reading Program June 2 through August 2. Simply submit a brief review of any book that you read during this time period and you’ll be entered for weekly and program finale raffle drawings. The more you read, the more chances you have of winning. For more information, please call the library at 827-6950 or visit the Reference Desk.

 

LEGO Club for Tweens

Tweens in 4th-7th grades (ages 9 - 13) are invited to the library for an afternoon of building with Legos and hanging out. No registration is necessary and it's free. Thanks to our Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library for providing the Legos for this very special program just for Tweens, including our pink Legos. Tween girl Lego lovers, we want you to join our club, too.

 

Summer Reading Event: "Frozen" in July

Olaf, the happy snowman, invites the whole family to join Youth Services Librarian Anne and Girly-Girl Partea's at the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library for "Frozen" fun in July. We'll kick off the fun with frozen stories, bubble dancing to "Frozen" songs, decorating Olaf snowmen, topping it all off with a very special visit from the Snow Queen herself. Dressing up in your favorite "Frozen" clothing is absolutely encouraged, but not required. We look forward to celebrating all the fun things you can do "in summer." Thank you to the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library and Girly-Girl Partea's for generously sponsoring this winter wonderland. Please bring your own camera for picture-taking opportunities with the Snow Queen.

 

Nature Detective Workshops for Kids [NEW date - was July 12]

Children (ages 6 - 12) are invited to become Nature Detectives at our hands-on workshops where we'll learn all about bats and how these pollinators relate to gardening. Every child will receive free gardening goodies, including Nature Detective notebooks, and enjoy learning all about our wonderful Florida bats and why they are so valuable and not so scary. These workshops are designed by the Sisterhood of the Traveling Plants, sponsored by the Garden Club of St. Augustine and the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library, with special partners from Bird Island Park providing activities with a special bat craft afterwards. Space is limited; sign up for a workshop by stopping by the Reference Desk or calling the library at 827-6950.

Just for Babies: @10:15am; for babies up to 15 months and their caregivers. This infant lapsit is designed for one-on-one interaction between caregiver and baby. Families with multiple children are encouraged to attend Family Storytime.

Every 4th Wednesday of the month, the whole family is invited to the library to play board games, including Monopoly, Connect Four, Candy Land, Scrabble, Chutes & Ladders, Uno, and many more. Simply use your library card, or driver's license, to check out the games. All board games - including our new ones (Trivial Pursuit Family Edition, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Don't Drop the Egg, Super Mario Brothers Checkers, and Apples to Apples Disney Edition) are provided by the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library.

Magician Mark Alan returns to the library for a special "mad science"-themed magic show. Don't forget to check out our special magic books display the week of the program to learn your own magic tricks and stay tuned for another special magic show at your library MC'ed by Magician Mark Alan and presented by local Ponte Vedra teens in August. Summer Reading Event: Teen Wayback Wednesday

Who says LEGOS are just for little kids? All rising 6th - 12th graders are invited to enjoy an afternoon of LEGO fun including a newly-released movie about LEGOs, building with LEGO blocks with your friends, checking out LEGO books from the library, and playing LEGO Rock Band on our X-Box 360. Thanks to the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library, there will be pizza, soda, and munchies as well. Spark a Reaction by telling your friends to not miss the just-for-teens childhood fun at your library. All our summer reading participants are invited to join us for our celebratory Ice Cream Party and to wear your pajamas, if you wish. St. Augustine's Jane Quackenbush, author of The Rocket Ship Bed Trip, will be our special guest with a story about how you can dream your way around the solar system. Copies of the book will be on sale with proceeds benefitting the library. Join us for ice cream, an out-of-this-world story, crafts, and more. Thank you to the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library for generously sponsoring our entire summer reading program.

Magician Mark Alan and Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library teen volunteers are prepared to dazzle children of all ages with their magic! Sponsored by the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library, these teens have attended weekly magic workshops with Magician Mark Alan to learn all the magic they are eager to share with you. The 11:15 am show is a repeat of the first and everyone is welcome. Come on out and prepare to be dazzled by our talented teens!

 

Teen Summer Reading Program

Beginning June 9, we encourage all rising 6th-12th graders to stop by the Reference Desk to pick up reading bookmark reviews and participate in our Summer Reading Program which begins on June 16. Read whatever you like, write a short review for each book, and turn them in at the Reference Desk. All reviews will be entered into a weekly raffle for free teen fiction books from our prize cart. With your permission on the bookmark, your reviews may be posted to our library's website. At the end of the summer, three grand prize winners will each receive a gift certificate to The Bookmark, a great used book store in Neptune Beach. All prizes are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library.

 

Children's Summer Reading Program (Florida Library Youth Program - FLYP)

FLYP reading logs will be available starting June 9.
All children, birth to 5th grade, are invited to participate in FLYP (Florida Library Youth Program) which includes books and other prizes for reading and fun, weekly performances from magician Mark Alan, St. Johns County Youth Services Staff including Slime Sisters Science and "Frozen" in July, and much more.  All performances, the celebratory ice cream party, and the $1000 worth of book prizes are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library. Great Books Discussion Group

Just for Babies - Held the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays in August (5th & the 19th) at 10:15am; for babies up to 15 months and their caregivers. This infant lapsit is designed for one-on-one interaction between caregiver and baby. Families with multiple children are encouraged to attend Family Storytime.

Family Storytime - Held every Tuesday morning in August at 11am; for children 16 months - 5 years and their families, though no child will be turned away. For more information on system-wide library storytimes, please go here.

Teen Gaming Night

 Teens (Ages 13-18) are invited to have fun with friends at the library. Play "E" and "T"-rated games on our PlayStation 3 (with the Move), our new Nintendo WiiU, Nintendo Wii, or X-Box 360 (with the Kinect) set up on three TVs for simultaneous playing. Don't worry about waiting for a turn - we'll have board games to play! Snacks are provided. STAND Against Bullying with Magician Mark Alan

Magician Mark Alan deals with a serious topic in a fun manner using comedy, magic, ventriloquism, musical routines, and lots of interaction to help give kids the tools to take a stand against bullying. This 45-minute program is intended for elementary-age children, but is fun for all. Sponsored by the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library and made possible at all St. Johns County branch libraries by the Barbara A. Kay Foundation Grant. Everyone is welcome!

 

Summer Reading Event: Teen "Divergent" Day

All rising 6th - 12th graders and their friends are invited to join us for our final Teen Summer Reading Program event:  "Divergent" Day! We'll watch the newly released book-inspired movie featuring Tris and Four, raffle off copies of the newly released Four by Veronica Roth, play board games, eat pizza, drink soda, and devour "Dauntless" chocolate cake all thanks to generous support of the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library. Spark a Reaction and show Faction pride by coming dressed in your favorite faction's colors if you wish! Bring your friends and don't forget to keep turning your Teen Summer Reading bookmark reviews through August 2 for chances to win books as prizes and let us know what you love to read.
