Salute to Veterans Dance - February 26, 2-5 pm

In honor of all veterans, the St. Johns County Public Library System invites everyone to a Veterans Salute Dance! On Sunday, February 26, from 2-5 pm, veterans, their families, and all members of the community are invited to the Council on Aging River House, located on the Matanzas River at 180 Marine Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084. Enjoy light refreshments, a cash bar, and dancing to WWII-era music provided by E. T. Swings the Thing live band. Generously sponsored by all St. Johns County Public Library Branch Friends of the Library groups, we invite you to kick up your heels at this event honoring all United States veterans! Questions? Program Descriptions:

Book Discussion – Each branch library will host a book discussion. Everyone is invited to attend, to share thoughts and personal interpretations of Unbroken.

Build Your Own Victory Garden – Kids can help build a victory garden at the Main Branch Library while enjoying some WWII-era music and decorating with special “Victory Garden” posters and signs.

Candy Sushi – Children are invited to create some    special sushi made with candy ingredients instead of raw fish!

Fairytale Theatre – Join Anna Mae Belle and company as they present a selection of traditional Japanese fairy tales in authentic Japanese costumes.  
                 
Dance Classes – Learn the dances that were popular during WWII!  Sign up for a free dance class courtesy of Dance Alday Studios in Ponte Vedra Beach and Arthur Murray Dance Studio in St. Augustine. Classes are free but space is limited and registration is required. Contact the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library at    904-827-6950 for registration and more information about Dance Alday classes. Arthur Murray Dance Studio can be contacted directly at 904-819-1889.  Remember to wear proper footwear – no tennis shoes or flip-flops!

Genealogy: Using Military Records in Research – C. Ann Staley, certified Genealogist, will give you tips on how to use military records as you research your family tree.

Japanese Art – Children in grades 3-5 are invited to learn about the influence of Japanese art and Japanese-inspired watercolor!

Learn About Liberty Ships– Learn how Liberty Ships contributed to the Allied victory of WWII. Taught by local historian, Ed Trester.

Onigiri for Adults– Ms. Kathy will help adults make and enjoy this traditional Japanese rice dish.

Prisoners of War: Stolen Freedom– Produced by      Michael Rothfeld, this documentary tells the stories of 4 American ex-POWs. Learn about their experiences and how they survived.

Survival Skills for Youth– Boy Scouts of Troop 288 of the Ponte Vedra United Methodist Church will be teaching youth ages 10-17 personal safety tips and what to do if you get lost in the woods. Attendees will also get to make survival bracelets.

Survival Skit for Kids – The Boys & Girls Club of Hastings will perform a survival skit for children of all ages.

Youth Origami – Children, tweens, and teens are invited to practice this Japanese art of folding paper into animals and other exciting shapes!
