If you need assistance requesting this selection, please stop by the Adult Reference Desk or call our Library at (904) 827-6950. Book Synopsis “The Christie Affair follows the story of Nan O’Dea, the mistress of Agatha Christie’s husband. The book takes place in the days preceding and during the infamous 11-day disappearance of Agatha Christie. Nan was once a girl who fell in love with a boy in Ireland, though they were unable to be together. In this story about love, revenge, and the past catching up to the present, The Christie Affair explores Nan’s story as it fictionalizes what could have happened during those fateful 11 days.” (taken from The Bibliophile)

Book Synopsis “From The Violin Conspiracy: Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. If he’s lucky, he’ll get a job at the hospital cafeteria. If he’s extra lucky, he’ll earn more than minimum wage. But Ray has a gift and a dream — he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music. When he discovers that his great-great-grandfather’s beat-up old fiddle is actually a priceless Stradivarius, all his dreams suddenly seem within reach. Together, Ray and his violin take the world by storm. But on the eve of the renowned and cutthroat Tchaikovsky Competition — the Olympics of classical music — the violin is stolen, a ransom note for five million dollars left in its place. Ray will have to piece together the clues to recover his treasured Strad…before it’s too late. With the descendants of the man who once enslaved Ray’s great-great-grandfather asserting that the instrument is rightfully theirs, and with his family staking their own claim, Ray doesn’t know who he can trust — or whether he will ever see his beloved violin again.” (taken from Reading Group Guides)

Book Synopsis “Paris, 1939: Young and ambitious Odile Souchet has it all: her handsome police officer beau and a dream job at the American Library in Paris. When the Nazis march into Paris, Odile stands to lose everything she holds dear, including her beloved library. Together with her fellow librarians, Odile joins the Resistance with the best weapons she has: books. But when the war finally ends, instead of freedom, Odile tastes the bitter sting of unspeakable betrayal. Montana, 1983: Lily is a lonely teenager looking for adventure in small-town Montana. Her interest is piqued by her solitary, elderly neighbor. As Lily uncovers more about her neighbor’s mysterious past, she finds that they share a love of language, the same longings and the same intense jealousy, never suspecting that a dark secret from the past connects them. A powerful novel that explores the consequences of our choices and the relationships that make us who we are — family, friends and favorite authors — The Paris Library shows that extraordinary heroism can sometimes be found in the quietest of places.” (taken from Reading Group Guides)

Get ready for Halloween with “Ghost Hunters” TV star, Dustin Pari, as he presents “Documenting the Dead.” From Dustin’s website: “Dustin takes a look back at his own efforts to conduct paranormal research and brings it back even further to some of the earliest spirit communication techniques. Complete with historical stories, evidence, and some “would-be” evidence, Dustin does a great job of presenting an honest and respectful retrospective piece on contacting the other side. Filled with anecdotal tales from his travels, and evidence from his investigations, this lecture is just the right mix of educational, fun, and creepy.” This event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library.
Questions? Call us at 904-827-6950 or email Anne at ascrawford@sjcfl.us. You will need to provide your own internet-connected device and a Zoom account to participate.
