Local author, Greg Leonard, talks with Leslie of the Bookmobile-Extension Services Department about his recently published book, Hastings: Florida’s Potato Capital. This is a personal story for Leonard and those that know of Hastings when it was a thriving town with a rich history. Located close to Palatka, a major port at that time, and Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway, farms in Hastings provided food for not only local communities, but also throughout the United States. This bustling town that once had its own newspaper would start to see a decline with the construction of State Road No. 4, now known as US 1.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Join Amy, a librarian, and AyoLane, a naturalist, for an outdoor book club that focuses on our natural world. We’ll discuss our all-time favorite nature titles, both fiction and non-fiction. The book club will meet at parks throughout St. Johns County, practically in your own backyard!
The St. Johns County Library System has partnered with the St. Johns County Cultural Council to celebrate St. Johns County’s Bicentennial. The Cultural Council received a grant for all sorts of fun programs with the library throughout 2021, and one of the things they’re funding is our April Backyard Book Club, where they are giving the first 20 people to sign up a FREE copy of “Travels on the St. Johns River,” by John and William Bartram, edited by Thomas Hallock and Richard Franz. We will be meeting at Alpine Groves Park on Wednesday, April 21st (the day after William Bartram’s birthday!) right on the very St. Johns River we’ll be discussing. Registration is limited due to social distancing, so we will hold two back-to-back book club meetings (9:30 am or 11:00 am) to accommodate everyone.
In 1765 father and son naturalists John and William Bartram explored the St. Johns River Valley in Florida, a newly designated British territory and subtropical wonderland. They collected specimens and recorded extensive observations of the plants, animals, geography, ecology, and native cultures of an essentially uncharted region. The chronicle of their adventures provided the world with an intimate look at La Florida. Travels on the St. Johns River includes writings from the Bartrams’ journey in a flat-bottomed boat from St. Augustine to the river’s swampy headwaters near Lake Loughman, just west of today’s Cape Canaveral. Vivid entries from John’s Diary detail which tribes lived where and what vegetation overtook the river’s slow current. He describes the crisp, cold spring waters tasting like a gun barrel. Excerpts from William’s narrative, written a decade later when he tried to make a home in East Florida, contemplate the environment and the river that would come to be regarded as the liquid heart of his celebrated Travels . A selection of personal letters reveal John’s misgivings about his son’s decision to become a planter in an inhospitable pine barren with little more than a hovel as shelter, but they also speak to William’s belated sense of accomplishment for traveling past his father’s footsteps. Editors Thomas Hallock and Richard Franz provide valuable commentary and a modern record of the flora and fauna the Bartrams encountered. Taken together, the firsthand accounts and editorial notes help us see the land through the explorers’ eyes and witness the many environmental changes the centuries have wrought.
This event is free and open to the public, but for social distancing purposes, registration is required. If the weather is sunny, please bring your own camp chair for sitting out under the trees. If it’s rainy, we’ll be sitting in the park pavilion. Masks are encouraged, social distancing is required. Feel free to bring your own beverages! Questions? Please call Amy at 904.827.6942 or email at aackerman@sjcfl.us.

Most of us are familiar with the historical resources about St. Johns County that are located here locally. But do you know about the documents pertaining to St. Johns that are housed in Tallahassee? Join us as Dr. Josh Goodman, Archives Historian at the State Archives of Florida, shows some of the really neat resources that can be found at the State Archives. He not only shows them to us, but he also instructs us on how we can locate the digitized copies ourselves on the Florida Memory website. This event is the first in a five part series. In this one, Dr. Goodman will concentrate on resources specific to our Territorial Period (1821-1845).

Event Details
Join Main Library’s Adult Programming Assistant Beth online in a recorded presentation of a special Zoom poetry program hosted by the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum! During April, in collaboration with the St. Johns County Public Library System, the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum happily welcomed visual artist Cyriaco Lopes and poet Terri Witek to Flagler College for a participatory virtual event that took place in celebration of National Poetry Month.
Zoom has become a ubiquitous part of both our personal and professional lives during the course of the pandemic. Through The Keepers, Lopes and Witek utilized Zoom as an investigation of the gap between images and text, as orchestra, as conversation, as interactive performative work. The artists encouraged viewers to participate in the creation of both visual and auditory elements in order to generate a unique art experience on this newly popular platform. This is an online event that you can conveniently watch on our website, our Facebook page, or our Youtube channel.
About the artists:
The work of Cyriaco Lopes Terri Witek combines images and texts in a lyrical meditation on the passage of time and on the imperfect language of what remains and is transformed. Thus, they bring together fragments of history and cultural landscapes: decontextualized museum cartouches and manuals, sculptures and places. Interested in both the genealogies of experimental visual poetry and those of the visual essay, in their work, mythology, history, and archaeology weave a delicate plot that refers us to when philosophy was poetry and art was life. From the beginning, their artistic work as a duo values both chance and choice, investigating the different visual poetics of the text-image binomial.
Their various projects range from postcards given to strangers on the street to site-specific installations, artist’s books, and participatory performances. Always giving great importance to cultural memory, multilingualism, and the trace of a deep past, they also recover materiality as a central element. Understood as a whole, woven of everyday vestiges, the work of Cyriaco Lopes Terri Witek suggests that the convergence of different means of expression and disparate bodies gives rise to a third mysterious thing that may resemble the future.

Are you a veteran in need, love a veteran who is struggling with suicidal thoughts, or just someone who cares about veterans? Please join Reference and Adult Services Librarian Anne Crawford as she sits down with St. Johns County Commissioner and 20-year soldier, Jeremiah Ray Blocker, for a special interview about The Fire Watch, the only organization nationwide dedicated to preventing veteran suicide. As St. Johns County is home to St. Augustine, our Nation’s Oldest City with a long military history and home to our Nation’s only veteran suicide prevention organization, The Fire Watch is incredibly worthy of recognizing for St. Johns County’s 200th anniversary.
For more about Fire Watch, please visit the The Fire Watch’s website and/or download The Fire Watch app to your device. The Fire Watch invites veterans and civilians alike to volunteer to support veterans in need. Any veteran struggling with their mental health is encouraged to join this organization and receiver a Watcher – someone specially assigned by The Fire Watch to the veteran in need to confide in and reach out to anytime. Thank you to our St. Johns County Communications Division for helping to produce this virtual interview. This special interview also honors Mental Health Month.
