Event Details

Who was he – where did he come from – was he well educated – was he a member of the nobility? Was Columbus unusually religious, or was he more secular? What were the circumstances of his age that caused him to think about exploration to the west of Europe? Why was he so wrong when assessing the diameter of the Earth? How many continents were known at the time Columbus? Why did it take him more than 10 years to get funds for his exploration? How many voyages did he make – more than one? Did he ever set foot on the North American continent, and did he believe he had discovered a new continent? Did his voyages of discovery yield much gold for the Spanish monarchs? What does Columbus’ accomplishment mean to you? Many facets of this complex and controversial man’s life will be discussed.

Dr. Penney is a retired medical school professor of physiology and biochemistry. During the past 7-8 years he has given dozens of presentations to school groups, libraries, and astronomy societies on science, history, astronomy, biology, paleontology, etc.
