Event Details

Today is the 456th anniversary of St. Augustine’s founding! Celebrate by joining Beth online as she visits the Mission Nombre de Dios, where she’ll meet with Dr. Timothy Johnson, the Craig and Audrey Thorn Distinguished Professor of Religion at Flagler College. Dr. Johnson recently uncovered an extremely rare and important early seventeenth-century text written in both Spanish and Timucua, the language of the indigenous peoples that inhabited north Florida when the Spanish arrived here in 1565. He will explain the significance of this book, written by the Franciscan Friar Francisco Pareja with his unknown Timucua co-editors and published in Mexico in 1628, and what its discovery means for contemporary and future scholars. This program can be conveniently viewed on our website, our Facebook page, or our Youtube channel.
