Event Details

Join us in recognizing women who impacted the equality of women in a variety of areas. Every Monday in March, we’re featuring a fictionalized account of real women who took real action. All movies start at 1pm. Light refreshments provided by our Friends of the Library.

3/6: Erin Brockovich – Julia Roberts stars in this legal drama based on the true story of a woman who helped win the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit. Erin Brockovich (Roberts) is a single mother of three who, after losing a personal injury lawsuit, asks her lawyer, Ed Masry (Albert Finney), if he can help her find a job. Ed gives her work as a file clerk in his office, and she runs across some information on a little-known case filed against Pacific Gas and Electric.

3/13: A League of Their Own – Tom Hanks stars as Jimmy Dugan, a washed-up ballplayer whose big league days are over. Hired to coach in the All-American Girls Baseball League of 1943, while the male pros are at war, Dugan finds himself drawn back into the game by the heart and heroics of his all-girl team. Jon Lovitz adds a scene-stealing cameo as the sarcastic scout who recruits Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis), the baseball dolly with a Babe Ruth swing. Teammates Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O’Donnell round out the roster, taking the team to the World Series. Based on the true story of the pioneering women who blazed the trail, on the fields and off, for generations of athletes.

3/20: North Country – Charlize Theron stars in a fictionalized version of the first successful legal prosecution of a sexual-harassment case in the United States. After fleeing from her abusive husband, young mother Josey Aimes returns home to Minnesota, where she finds work in the iron mines. Josey refuses to endure the frequent sexual innuendoes and unwelcome physical contact that her male co-workers inflict on the women. When her complaints to the mine owners fall on deaf ears, Josey seeks a legal remedy, becoming the key plaintiff in a class action lawsuit that leads to the first sexual harassment ruling in United States judicial history.

3/27: What’s Love Got to Do With It? – Angela Bassett stars as singer Tina Turner. This film follows Tina’s rise to stardom and how she gained the courage to break free from abusive husband, Ike Turner. Winning the right to retain her stage name after their divorce, Tina continues working to pay bills. She gets a break after meeting Roger Davies, who eventually helps her realize her dreams of rock stardom. Despite Ike’s attempts to win her back, Tina eventually prevails and finds solo success, accomplishing her dreams without Ike.
