Libby Quick Video Tips:

OverDrive has announced that they are retiring their original OverDrive app and has removed it from the Apple App Store, Google Play, and Microsoft Store. New users will only be able to download the Libby app going forward (see FAQ below for Kindle information). Existing OverDrive app users won’t be affected by this change, though we do encourage switching to Libby now to continue enjoying all of your favorite OverDrive content.

Libby has added great modern features:

What is Libby?

Libby is an app designed by OverDrive that allows you to borrow ebooks, digital audiobooks, and magazines from your public library. You can stream titles with WiFi or mobile data, or download them for offline use and read anytime, anywhere. All you need to get started is a library card.

Why is OverDrive retiring the OverDrive app?

OverDrive’s goal with Libby was to create a new, fresh experience that is warm and welcoming to users. Libraries are community places, full of people and stories and knowledge, and OverDrive is dedicated to reflecting this in a digital setting. OverDrive utilizes partner and user feedback to continue to enhance services on Libby to bring the best reading experience for all users. Libby is easy-to-use, with tons of great features, both familiar and new, with access to the same great digital collection you love.

What devices are compatible with Libby?

Libby is compatible with:

  • iOS 10+
  • Android 5.0+

Alternatively, if you have a Windows computer, Mac computer, or a Chromebook, you can use Libby in your web browser at libbyapp.com. Use the latest version of your preferred web browser for the best user experience.

What about Kindle users?

The OverDrive app will not be removed the Amazon App Store on February 23, 2022. It will continue to be available from the Amazon Appstore until further notice. Kindle Fire users are welcome to use Libby and stream ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines in their browser from libbyapp.com or from our OverDrive website.

Can I still transfer books to my dedicated ereader (i.e. Kobo or Nook)?

Yes. If a user has a NOOK, Kobo, or similar dedicated ereader, they can download books to a computer then use Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to transfer them to their device. This option is available from libbyapp.com or our OverDrive website. You can learn more about using a dedicated ereader with Libby here.

Can I continue to download audiobooks to a desktop computer and transfer to an MP3 player?

After February 23, 2022, if you already have OverDrive for Windows or OverDrive for Mac you can continue using those applications without disruption. However, OverDrive will no longer support new downloads of those applications.

As technology continues to evolve and trend toward the use of mobile devices, OverDrive does not plan to build support in Libby for downloading audiobooks to a desktop computer and transferring them to an MP3 player.

Will I still be able to access OverDrive from my computer?

Yes. You can access OverDrive at sjcpls.overdrive.com.

Will my wish list from the OverDrive app transfer over to Libby?

Yes. Libby will prompt you to sync your wish lists from the OverDrive app and sjcpls.overdrive.com. Learn more about syncing your wish list to Libby.

Will my checkouts and holds transfer over to Libby?

As long as it is the same library card, it will sync your checkouts and holds between OverDrive and Libby.

What books (formats) does Libby not support?

As of right now, PDF is the only format not supported in Libby. OverDrive is currently working on a solution to provide support for this format in Libby.

Will I still be able to transfer materials with Adobe Digital Editions?

Yes, the ability to transfer will still be in place.

Can I recommend titles for purchase through Libby?

OverDrive is still developing a solution for title recommendations in Libby. In the meantime, you can recommend titles via our OverDrive website.
