Welcome back! This month we are reading and discussing Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun. Read what others are saying about it:
“A delicate, haunting story, steeped in sorrow and hope.”
—Ron Charles, The Washington Post
“What stays with you in ‘Klara and the Sun’ is the haunting narrative voice—a genuinely innocent, egoless perspective on the strange behavior of humans obsessed and wounded by power, status and fear.” —Booker Prize committee
“As with Ishiguro’s other works, the rich inner reflections of his protagonists offer big takeaways, and Klara’s quiet but astute observations of human nature land with profound gravity . . . This dazzling genre-bending work is a delight.”
—Publishers Weekly [starred review]
“A haunting fable of a lonely, moribund world that is entirely too plausible.”
—Kirkus Reviews [starred review]
“The novel is a masterpiece of great beauty, meticulous control and, as ever, clear, simple prose.”
—Bryan Appleyard, The Sunday Times
“A deft dystopian fable about the innocence of a robot that asks big questions about existence”
—The Financial Times
For the convenience of all, this title will be discussed at both the morning and evening book club. Please join us for some fun, socialization and just all-around good time!

REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Join us for an outdoor book club that focuses on our natural world. We discuss our all-time favorite nature titles, both fiction and non-fiction. The book club meets at parks throughout St. Johns County, practically in your own backyard! This month we will be meeting in Vaill Point Park.
This month we’ll be reading an environmental classic, Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. Conservationist Rachel Carson spent over six years documenting the effects on DDT‚ a synthetic organic compound used as an insecticide‚ on numerous communities. Her analysis revealed that such powerful, persistent chemical pesticides have been used without a full understanding of the extent of their potential harm to the whole biota, including the damage they’ve caused to wildlife, birds, bees, agricultural animals, domestic pets, and even humans. In this book, Carson discusses her findings and expresses passionate concern for the future of the planet and all the life inhabiting it, calling on us all to act responsibly, carefully, and as stewards of the living earth. An instant bestseller that was read by President Kennedy during the summer of 1962, this classic remains one of the best introductions to the complicated and controversial subject. This title is available on the Hoopla platform as an e-book and in two different e-audiobook formats, narrated by Kaiulani Lee or by Susie Bernais. Please contact Amy directly if you’d prefer a print copy of the book.
This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. If the weather is sunny, please bring your own camp chair for sitting out under the trees. If it’s rainy, we’ll be sitting in the park pavilion. Feel free to bring your own snacks & beverages! Please notify us at least 3 days in advance if you should need a sign language interpreter. If you have questions please contact Amy at aackerman@sjcfl.us or 904.827.6934.
This book club is a partnership between the St. Johns County Public Library System and the St. Johns County Parks & Recreation Department. Some materials are supplied by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine.

The August selection our Book Club will be reading is The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb. Print copies of The Violin Conspiracy, while they last, are available at the Adult Reference Desk at the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library for checkout. You can also request a copy of this selection in our catalog: The Violin Conspiracy. If you need assistance requesting this selection, please stop by the Adult Reference Desk or call our Library at (904) 827-6950. This selection is also available as an e-book and as an e-audiobook in our database, Overdrive, which is also available as a free app called Libby for all Android and Apple devices. We can’t wait to discuss this book with you!
Book Synopsis “From The Violin Conspiracy: Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. If he’s lucky, he’ll get a job at the hospital cafeteria. If he’s extra lucky, he’ll earn more than minimum wage. But Ray has a gift and a dream — he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music. When he discovers that his great-great-grandfather’s beat-up old fiddle is actually a priceless Stradivarius, all his dreams suddenly seem within reach. Together, Ray and his violin take the world by storm. But on the eve of the renowned and cutthroat Tchaikovsky Competition — the Olympics of classical music — the violin is stolen, a ransom note for five million dollars left in its place. Ray will have to piece together the clues to recover his treasured Strad…before it’s too late. With the descendants of the man who once enslaved Ray’s great-great-grandfather asserting that the instrument is rightfully theirs, and with his family staking their own claim, Ray doesn’t know who he can trust — or whether he will ever see his beloved violin again.” (taken from Reading Group Guides)

Event Details
The City of St. Augustine Beach’s Sustainability and Environmental Planning Advisory Committee (SEPAC) invites the public to view the film “Reuse!: Because You Can’t Recycle the Planet” and discuss it with a panel of local environmental experts.
The free event will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 25 at the Anastasia Island Branch Library, 124 Sea Grove Main Street in St. Augustine Beach.
The film is about finding fun and easy solutions to our country’s complicated waste problems. It follows filmmaker Alex Eaves on his cross-country journey to discover what people are doing to reuse items that others might throw away. The film has been featured at numerous film festivals.
It will be followed by a discussion session with Jen Lomberk, Matanzas Riverkeeper, and Adam Morley, District Director for the Florida Wildlife Federation.
SEPAC is restarting its environmental education program after a two-year COVID hiatus. The program is also sponsored by the St. Johns County Public Library System.
“We are very excited to kick off our renewed series with Adam, Jen, and a film that puts a creative spin on reduce, reuse, and recycle,” Lana Bandy, SEPAC Chair, says. “Attendees will get to see what people across the country are doing to solve our waste issues and talk to our local experts about what is being done here and how they can help.”
Questions about this event can be directed to Dariana Fitzgerald, deputy city clerk, at dfitzgerald@cityofsab.org or by phone at 904-471-2122 or fax at 904-471-4108.
