The Best Summer Starts at the Library: The St. Johns County Public Library System Announces Summer Reading Program for the Whole Family!

School is almost out and the temperature is rising, which means it is time to start planning for summer. The best way to beat the heat is at the library! This year, the St. Johns County Public Library System is thrilled to announce a hybrid virtual and in person summer literacy initiative for the whole family, “The Best Summer at Your Library.” No matter where or how you read, your library has an option for you!

Through the library’s READsquared website and free app, readers of all ages can log days read independently and as a family.  Each logged reading day awards points that are used to enter weekly drawings for prizes such as books, totes, and more. Earn 100 points a week and readers are automatically entered to win. The READsquared program also offers fun reading missions, bingos, and special incentives for attending virtual programs. Paper reading logs are also available.

“Librarians understand that children who don’t read and learn during the summer months fall behind. It’s called the ‘summer slide.’ The Best Summer offers incentives to keep reading skills sharp ahead of the new school year,” said Library System Director Debra Rhodes Gibson.

“The Best Summer at Your Library” begins online on June 14, but we’ll be celebrating in person on June 21 with a kickoff event for families, “Amp up the Magic.” This special show features Magician Mark Alan and is being held at the St. Augustine Amphitheater. Tickets are free, but required for entry. Visit any SJCPLS location on June 19 between 10 a.m-3 p.m. to get yours! This event has a limited capacity and tickets are available on a first come, first served basis.

“The Best Summer at Your Library” is proudly sponsored by the library’s multiple Friends of the Library groups. To learn more about the library’s 2021 Summer Reading Program contact your local library or visit the library’s website, www.sjcpls.org.
